MOC unveils Taiwan’s cultural program for Osaka Expo

To participate in Expo 2025 in Osaka, the Ministry of Culture (MOC) will launch a cultural program titled “We Taiwan,” scheduled to take place from Aug. 2 to 20. On May 15, the MOC unveiled the program’s main visual theme along with its mascot, “a-We.”

In response to the Osaka Expo’s theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” the program underscores the concept of “Supporting the Future, the Island of Miracles,”  highlighting Taiwan’s cultural adaptability and its confidence in the future amid a changing world. By embracing diverse perspectives, Taiwan reflects on its own identity, engaging new-generation communities and integrating emerging technologies with various forms of cultural and artistic expression.

Much like the evolution of Taiwan’s main island, the cultural program’s mascot, a-We, is a fictional creature born from the collision of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Symbolizing resilience and optimism, it embodies a bubble of hope, emerging from hardship and constantly transfiguring in its quest for means of survival.

The MOC noted that “We Taiwan” is an initiative made possible through the efforts of the Taiwan Cultural Center at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan.

The program will feature over 545 artists from 38 art groups, delivering a total of 129 performances. In addition, cultural markets will be held over two weekends, showcasing Taiwan’s distinctiveness to international visitors.

“We Taiwan” is structured around four thematic sections: “Blended Colors (混融色彩),” “Creativity that Crosses Over (跨域創造),” “Dynamic Energy (萬變氣場),” and “The Power of Play (遊戲能力).” These themes highlight Taiwan’s unique cultural appeal across contemporary and historical venues, as well as digital and physical spaces.
