CONCEPT
“We TAIWAN” is organized by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture as a key initiative for cultural engagement and global connections.
Taiwan will present “Supporting the Future, the Island of Miracles” in response to the theme of the Osaka Expo, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” highlighting Taiwan’s cultural adaptability and its confidence in the future amid a changing world. With diverse perspectives, Taiwan reflects on its own identity, engaging new-generation communities and integrating emerging technologies with various forms of cultural and artistic expression. Through the language of future generations, it shares an unique story with a global audience.
Taiwan is a resilient island where tectonic plates meet, ocean currents cold and warm converge, and monsoons from every direction cross paths. It has always faced the world with openness. Its diverse peoples, layered histories, blend of East and West, and a global perspective have nurtured an inclusive, flexible, and adaptable society. Taiwan respects tradition but embraces innovation, follows destiny but not bound by it. From technology to culture, we write, paint, sing, dance, and perform. Driven by innate qualities of cultural hybridity, artists use multidimensional thinking and boundless creativity to share the romantic and resilient stories of Taiwan with the world.
Believing that the power of the future lies in connecting differences and bringing people together, not in crowning individuals, Taiwan has always stood as “we,” a collective; hence the name “We TAIWAN.”
We believe that as long as we as a collective act and live fully in each present moment, the future will arrive like a better-than-expected wonder.

Coming Soon...

Taiwanese people have a magical ability to turn reality into play. They excel at piecing together creativity within limitations, inventing their own rules and ways to play, transforming the quotidian blandness into a collective adventure that everyone can join. This “power of play” is not just a cultural attitude but also a form of collective creativity: flexible, spontaneous, willing to take risks and constantly recombining. It’s the driving force that keeps Taiwanese culture vibrant and evolving.
“The Power of Play” transforms the entire city of Osaka into a cultural playground. It charts hybrid real-and-virtual routes connecting VS. art space in Umeda, city districts, and sound hubs. Using mobile devices, digital guides, and online maps, participants embark on a cultural adventure to explore Taiwanese sensibilities across the city. As they visit landmarks, try local foods, attend exhibitions, and experience performances, they gradually “become Taiwanese,” unlocking new perspectives on Taiwanese culture. Each mission is a micro cultural action: it might be a phrase in a dialect, a distinctive sound, a performance at a local market, or a chance encounter on a street corner. This stage-less, participatory theater invites audiences to roam the city and experience how Taiwanese culture lives within every detail and hidden corner.
