This film, directed by Chang Ying and starring the popular actor Ling Yun, adapts several well-known Aesop’s fables and stages a wild forest battle against the natural backdrop of Beitou’s hills. It stands as a one-of-a-kind production in Taiwanese cinema history, a “natural landscape, animal-costumed, Taiwanese-language fairy tale film,” and has been hailed by younger generations of movie fans as “the most absurdly hilarious Taiwanese-language film ever made.”
The story unfolds in a peaceful forest where the animals are happily singing together, until a bloodthirsty wolf pack suddenly attacks. Meanwhile, the forest’s hero, Sika Deer, is elsewhere, locked in a fierce battle with Elk over the affection of Miss Deer. By the time Sika Deer rushes back, he finds that Uncle Deer has already been killed by the wolves, leaving behind a dying wish for Sika Deer to avenge him. At the same time, the flirtatious and jealous Foxy, envious of the much-adored Miss Deer, hatches a devious plot: teaming up with Elk to deceive Miss Deer into thinking Sika Deer is dead, even luring the Wolf Lord to invade Grandpa Goat’s territory. Amid the ensuing chaos, the rabbit and the turtle even join in for a race, as the forest erupts into a wild and noisy spectacle. Will the heroic Sika Deer be able to save Miss Deer and rescue the forest from disaster?
