Shēn Island is like a vessel, carrying the people of Taiwan as they face the surging waves of history. Kūn Island is like a bedrock, anchoring itself in the sea—resiliently breaking through waves amidst the turbulence of time and space. On this island, the people of Taiwan have crossed through years of silence, adrift in darkness, seeking the sacred light of freedom. On this island, the gods of Taiwan have passed through cycles of sacrifice and rebirth, becoming the light for the people of Taiwan.
Piànn-tiûnn’s Siù feat. the Electric Divine Generals takes Taiwan’s modern democratic history as the core narrative thread of its performance. Characters such as the Electric Clairvoyant, Electric Keen Hearing, Electric Generals Hsieh and Fan, the Millennial Courtesan, and the Goddess-Priestess are infused with newly imagined contemporary symbolism. For instance, the Electric Clairvoyant and Electric Keen Hearing embody the guardians of freedom following the return of free speech to the people; the Electric Seventh and Eighth Lords represent the forces of justice patrolling the realms of yin and yang, uncovering hidden grievances from the era of White Terror. Drawing from traditional folk belief, the performance opens a space for deep discussions on transitional justice. Throughout the process, electric light continually illuminates the path ahead, sweeping away all shadows and obscurities—serving as a metaphor for Taiwan’s ongoing journey. It evokes a call for future generations to carry the light forward, clearing the lingering fog of Taiwan’s modern history.
