Having a robot companion like Doraemon was choreographer Huang Yi’s childhood dream. He taught himself programming to bring this vision to life, line by line, enabling the cold, mechanical KUKA industrial robotic arm to express emotion and subtle textures. Spending an average of ten hours to craft just one minute of movement, bringing to life Huang Yi & KUKA, a duet between human and robot. Rather than dazzling with flashy virtuosity, the work focuses on the balance between humanity and technology. Set against a backdrop of music and light, it becomes quietly powerful and profoundly moving, allowing audiences to see that an industrial robot can be more than a tool; it can move in harmony with humans.
Since its premiere in 2012, Huang Yi & KUKA has toured 19 countries and 47 cities, with over 109 performances. Through refined choreography and logical programming, Huang continues to invite audiences to explore the relationship between humans and machines.
