VR Screening

In 2011, Riverbed Theatre launched the “Just for You Project,” staging ten large-scale immersive performances for one audience member at a time in hotels, art museums, galleries, and historic alleys around Taiwan. The performances blurred the boundaries between performer and audience, emphasizing the intimacy of seeing and being seen. In 2022, the company transformed these intimate live performances into virtual reality experiences, making their surreal sensory journeys accessible to audiences around the world.

The “Just for You Trilogy”— All That Remains (2022), Over the Rainbow (2023), and A Simple Silence (2024)—have been screened at the Venice Film Festival and won numerous international honors, including the Best Immersive Experience Award at the Luxembourg City Film Festival, the VR360 Award at the Kaohsiung Film Festival, and the Panorama Prize at the Montreal New Cinema Festival. The films blur the lines between reality and fiction, immersing viewers in a dreamlike realm of fear, desire, and longing. The Trilogy invites the audience to embrace the unknown.

We are comforted by facts, by the familiarity of things we know to be “true.” The sun rises in the east. There are twenty-four hours in a day. I exist. These truisms simplify our lives, enabling us to get through the process of living. We are not afraid to leap into the air, because we know we will land on the ground. All That Remains explores the possibilities that exist beyond these everyday patterns, that blur the lines between truth and fiction.

It is human nature to long for something different, something that lies “somewhere over the rainbow.” At times, this aspirational dreaming leads to improvements, but more often than not, this attitude leads to a sense of discontent with our own lot, an unquenchable thirst for what is just beyond our reach. Over the Rainbow explores this precarious balance between desire and happiness, fantasy and the familiar.

It seems like such an easy request: a simple silence. A stillness without the weight of work or love or death. A moment in between. But we have learned there is an almost impossible gap between this ambition and the reality of living, that our silence is never simple. In the flickering light, we hold our breaths, anticipating the storm. A Simple Silence confronts us with the uneasiness of our inevitable truths, that every beginning implies an ending, that we are shadows passing through the darkness.
