We are comforted by facts, by the familiarity of things we know to be “true”. The sun rises in the east. There are twenty-four hours in a day. I exist. These truisms simplify our lives and enable us to get through the process of living.

We get by, day by day, until that unexpected moment when we are overwhelmed by the whisper in our hearts: despite all of our knowledge, we will never be known. All That Remains is a meditation on the fluid boundary between dream and reality, fear and desire. It is an invitation to see and be seen.

★ 2023 Festival du Nouveau Cinema - The Panorama Prize

★ 2023 Venice Immersive - Best of Immersive - Out of Competition

It is human nature to long for something different, something that lies “somewhere over the rainbow.” At times, this aspirational dreaming leads to improvements, but more often than not, this attitude leads to a sense of discontent with our own lot, an unquenchable thirst for what is just beyond our reach. Over the Rainbow explores this precarious balance between desire and happiness, fantasy and familiarity.

A Simple Silence is the final chapter in Riverbed Theatre’s award-winning “Just For You” Trilogy that premiered in Venice in 2022 with All That Remains and continued in 2023 with Over the Rainbow. This new 360 VR experience continues the series’ exploration of our connectedness to the world around us, imbuing the environment with an animistic quality while also blurring the boundary between seeing and being seen. The audience is not a witness to the experience; they are the experience. A Simple Silence confronts us with the uneasiness of our inevitable truths, that every beginning implies an ending, that we are shadows passing through the darkness.

Riverbed Theatre was founded in 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan. The company’s image-based, Total Theatre productions blur the boundaries between visual and performing arts. Critics have praised the organic, sculptural quality of Riverbed’s “subconscious” theatre, comparing the performances to the best works of Samuel Beckett and David Lynch. Riverbed has staged over fifty original productions, including works at the Taiwan National Theatre, National Taichung Theater, Asia Culture Center (Korea), Esplanade Studio Theatre (Singapore), Theatre de la Condition de Soies (France), Imaginale Figurentheater Festival (Germany), Kobe Arts Village Center (Japan), and Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center (USA).
